๐ฆ๐ช ๐ฎ๐ณ How to Get a Job in Dubai as an Indian

Indians are the largest community in the UAE โ roughly 35% of the population, more than 3.5 million people โ and Dubai remains one of the most accessible high-earning destinations for Indian professionals. But the process differs from Western destinations in ways that catch people out, and two India-specific steps are missed by almost every guide. This covers how employer sponsorship actually works, what "tax-free salary" really means, the visa routes including the ones that need no employer at all, and the attestation and Emigration Clearance requirements you have to handle from India.
In a hurry? Jump to the visa routes โ ยท the step-by-step process โ ยท the two India-specific steps โ ยท how to spot a scam โ
Two things to understand before you start
Your visa is tied to your employer. The UAE runs an employer-sponsorship system. In almost all cases, a UAE employer must sponsor your work permit and residence visa before you can legally work โ the employer drives the process, and the job offer comes first. There are exceptions, covered below, but they are exceptions.
There is no automatic permanent residence โ but long-term routes now exist. Unlike the UK or Canada, standard employment does not lead to settlement or citizenship. The 10-year Golden Visa and the Green Visa changed that picture for higher-skilled professionals. The honest framing: Dubai is about high tax-free earnings and career progression, with a genuine long-term path for qualifying talent โ not settlement by default.
One thing the UAE does not have, which makes it easier than most of Europe: no labour market test. Employers do not have to advertise the role locally and prove no one suitable applied. That removes weeks of process and a common reason employers refuse to hire internationally.
Can you apply from India, or do you need to be in Dubai?
You can apply from India, and for most people you should. UAE companies registered with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) can recruit workers from outside the country, and remote interviewing is standard. The sequence is: apply from India โ interview by video โ receive an offer โ the employer starts the work-permit process โ you travel.
The claim that "you cannot get a Dubai job unless you are already there" is too simplistic. Being locally available helps for roles an employer wants filled immediately, but it is not a legal requirement, and travelling without an offer means paying Dubai accommodation costs while you search.
The visa routes worth knowing
Standard employment visa
The default, and what most Indian professionals use. Employer-sponsored, typically two years, renewable. It is really two things processed together: a work permit from MOHRE for mainland jobs or from the relevant free-zone authority (DMCC, JAFZA, DIFC, ADGM and others) for free-zone roles, plus a residence visa from the federal immigration authority. See the mainland employment visa for the full requirements.
You will be placed in one of the UAE's skill classification levels (1โ5) based on your education and role. This affects which permits apply and your family-sponsorship rights, so your qualifications matter beyond salary.
Golden Visa โ 10 years, self-sponsored
Long-term residence for investors, exceptional talent, doctors, scientists, engineers in priority fields, top students and other categories. It requires no employer sponsor and is renewable indefinitely. Indians are among the largest applicant groups.
The catch most people miss: the Golden Visa is a residence visa. To take a salaried job, you still need your employer to issue a separate MOHRE work permit โ though that step is faster for Golden holders. It removes the residency tie, not the work-permit requirement.
Green Visa
For skilled professionals, freelancers and the self-employed who want to work without being tied to one employer. Worth checking if your work is project-based or you have multiple clients.
Jobseeker visit visa โ going without an offer
The UAE offers a jobseeker visit visa that needs no sponsor or host, valid for 60, 90 or 120 days. But eligibility is restricted: you must sit within MOHRE skill levels 1โ3 (managers, professionals, technicians), or have graduated from a top-500 global university within the last two years. You will also need to evidence financial means.
Do not assume you qualify. Check the current conditions with the UAE Government visa portal before booking anything.
Not sure which of these fits you? The free Workbeyond visa eligibility checker takes four questions and shows every route open to you, ranked by fit.
You cannot work on a tourist visa
This matters enough to state on its own. Under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 29 of 2021, entering on a visit or tourist visa and taking up employment without a valid work permit is illegal โ paid or unpaid. Employers permitting it face penalties from AED 100,000 to AED 1 million.
You may attend interviews and search for work on an appropriate visit status. You may not start working. If a recruiter tells you "start now and we will arrange your visa later", treat it as a serious warning sign rather than a shortcut.
What "tax-free salary" actually means
The headline draw is real, but be precise:
- No personal income tax on salary. Your gross is your take-home. This is the single biggest financial reason Indian professionals move to Dubai.
- 5% VAT on most goods and services, so day-to-day spending carries a small consumption tax.
- 9% federal corporate tax has applied since 2023 โ on business profits, not employee salaries. If you are an employee, it does not touch your pay.
The practical effect is that a Dubai salary goes considerably further than the equivalent in India or the UK once income tax is removed. But Dubai's cost of living, particularly rent, is high โ compare total packages including housing and transport allowances rather than headline salary. And check your Indian tax residency position, because NRI status has its own rules.
Which sectors are hiring in 2026
The Gulf market is active: Hays' 2026 GCC Salary Guide found 70% of surveyed employers expected to increase headcount during the year, with technical and digital skills the leading hiring priority.
Where Indian professionals most often find sponsored roles:
- Technology โ software and full-stack engineers, cloud and DevOps, cybersecurity, data engineers and analysts, AI and machine learning, ERP and SAP consultants.
- Banking and finance โ financial and FP&A analysts, auditors, risk and compliance, treasury, relationship managers. Dubai is a major regional financial centre.
- Construction and engineering โ civil, mechanical, electrical and MEP engineers, quantity surveyors, planning engineers, project managers, BIM specialists.
- Supply chain and logistics โ procurement, demand planning, logistics coordination, warehouse management, driven by Dubai's trade position.
- Sales, marketing and e-commerce โ B2B and SaaS sales, performance marketing, SEO, CRM and e-commerce management. Check the basic-to-commission split carefully on sales roles.
- Healthcare โ but regulated professions require licensing from the relevant UAE authority before you can practise. Investigate that before applying.
Search by job title, not by nationality. Employers advertise for skills, not for Indian candidates specifically, so "financial analyst Dubai" or "MEP engineer UAE" will find far more than "Dubai jobs for Indians". And search the wider UAE โ a strong role in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah is worth as much as one in Dubai.
Where you search matters as much as what you search for. Most general job boards mix sponsoring and non-sponsoring employers together, so you spend time on roles that were never open to you. Workbeyond lists only roles from employers willing to sponsor international candidates, so every UAE listing you see is one you can actually take. Browse visa-sponsored jobs in the UAE โ
The step-by-step process from India
- Secure a job offer from a UAE employer eligible to sponsor. Everything follows from this.
- Attest your documents โ see below. Start this early; it is a common cause of delay.
- The employer applies for the work permit via MOHRE or the free-zone portal. Approval typically takes around 3โ5 working days.
- You receive a 60-day entry permit, which lets you enter the UAE while residency is completed.
- Enter the UAE and complete the medical fitness test. Note that DHA medical screening rules were updated in July 2026.
- Emirates ID biometrics are captured.
- Residence visa issued, activating your right to live and work. The full flow โ entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, residency โ commonly takes 7โ21 working days.
- Onboarding โ health insurance, bank account, payroll. Once resident, you can sponsor family, with salary thresholds around AED 4,000 a month if housing is provided or AED 10,000 if not.
Permit and visa costs typically run AED 4,000โ9,000 or more depending on mainland versus free zone and your skill level. For standard employment, the employer normally bears these โ confirm before you accept.
Two India-specific steps most guides miss
Attestation of your qualifications
Degree certificates obtained outside the UAE generally need attestation for employment purposes, and the exact requirements depend on your occupation and skill category. Regulated professionals โ physicians, pharmacists, nurses, teachers โ also need approval from the competent UAE authority.
This runs on its own timeline and cannot be rushed at the end. Start it as soon as an offer looks likely.
ECR passports and Emigration Clearance
This is the step that stops people at the airport, and almost no guide written outside India mentions it.
If your Indian passport carries the Emigration Check Required (ECR) stamp and you are travelling to the UAE for employment, you need Emigration Clearance from the Protector of Emigrants before you leave. The UAE is one of 18 notified ECR countries. Workers who travel without it are liable to be stopped at immigration.
Two clarifications that matter:
- It applies to employment travel only. Since an exemption was introduced in October 2007, ECR passport holders can travel to the UAE for tourism, business, medical or family visits without clearance.
- It does not apply to every Indian traveller โ only to ECR-category passports. Check the status printed on yours.
The process runs through the eMigrate portal: register as an emigrant worker, ensure your employer or recruitment agent is also registered, upload your employment contract verified by the Indian mission, and submit to your nearest Protector of Emigrants office. Current guidance is on the Ministry of External Affairs emigration clearance page.
Do not rely on an agent's word for whether this applies to you.
Who pays โ and how to spot a scam
This matters more for the IndiaโGulf corridor than almost anywhere, because the volume of demand attracts fraud.
Under UAE rules, the employer bears recruitment costs, including expenses associated with obtaining your residence permit, and MOHRE guidance tells workers not to pay recruitment or employment fees demanded by an employer or recruitment office. Government guidance is equally clear that jobseekers who find roles through job portals should not be charged a commission for receiving the job.
So treat these as red flags:
- "Pay AED 8,000, and we guarantee your Dubai job and visa"
- An offer with no interview at all
- A recruiter representing a major company from an unrelated personal email address
- Requests to transfer money to a personal bank account
- Being asked to hand over your passport to an unverified agent
- "Start on your tourist visa, we will fix the paperwork later"
Verify independently: check that the company exists, find the recruiter yourself rather than through a link they sent, and use MOHRE's online service to view your employment offer and contract using your transaction and passport details. A legitimate employer is assessing your suitability, not selling you a position.
Check the offer before you travel
Your employment contract should match the job offer you signed before travelling โ keep a copy of it. Beyond salary, check allowances, accommodation, transport, medical insurance, commission structure, working hours, probation, annual leave, notice period, flight benefits and job title.
A salary that looks strong converted into rupees can feel much less generous once Dubai rent is accounted for. Evaluate the package, not the headline.
Emiratisation: what it means for you
Emiratisation is the UAE's policy to increase employment of nationals in the private sector. In 2026, companies with 50 or more employees must reach 10% Emirati representation in skilled roles, achieved through 2% annual increments, with penalties of AED 6,000 a month per unfilled position. More than 190,000 Emiratis now work in the private sector.
Does this mean Dubai has stopped hiring foreign workers? No โ the UAE continues to operate work-permit systems specifically to recruit from abroad, and 95% of companies subject to the policy met their targets in the first half of 2026.
What it does mean is that specialist skills matter more. Where an employer is balancing national workforce targets against international recruitment, the harder your expertise is to replace locally, the stronger your case.
Frequently asked questions
How can an Indian get a job in Dubai in 2026?
Secure an offer from a UAE employer eligible to sponsor you. The employer applies for your work permit through MOHRE or the relevant free-zone authority, and you complete the residence steps: entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID biometrics and residency issuance. You cannot legally work without sponsorship unless you hold a self-sponsored route such as the Golden or Green Visa.
Can I apply for Dubai jobs while living in India?
Yes. UAE companies registered with MOHRE can recruit from outside the country, and remote interviewing is standard. You apply from India, interview by video, receive an offer, and travel once the employer has started the permit process. Applying from India is usually cheaper than searching from Dubai without an offer.
Can I work in Dubai on a tourist visa?
No. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 29 of 2021, working on a visit or tourist visa without a valid work permit is illegal, paid or unpaid, with employer penalties from AED 100,000 to AED 1 million. You may attend interviews on a visit status but not start work.
Is a Dubai salary really tax-free for Indians?
There is no personal income tax on salary in the UAE, so your gross is your take-home. There is 5% VAT on spending, and a 9% corporate tax on business profits that does not affect employee pay. Your Indian tax residency status can still have implications, so check the NRI rules for your situation.
Do I need Emigration Clearance to work in Dubai?
Only if your Indian passport is ECR category and you are travelling for employment โ the UAE is one of 18 notified ECR countries. Since October 2007 ECR holders can travel to the UAE for tourism, business, medical or family visits without clearance. Check the status printed in your passport and the current Ministry of External Affairs guidance.
How long does a UAE work visa take from India?
The employer's MOHRE work-permit approval typically takes around 3โ5 working days, and the full flow โ entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, residency โ commonly takes 7โ21 working days once you are in the UAE. Document attestation beforehand can add weeks, so start it early.
Who pays for the Dubai work visa?
Under UAE rules, the employer bears recruitment costs and residence-permit expenses, and MOHRE guidance tells workers not to pay fees demanded by an employer or recruitment office. Costs typically run AED 4,000โ9,000 or more. Be very cautious of anyone asking you to pay for a guaranteed job.
Can I bring my family to Dubai?
Yes, once you hold a residence visa and meet the salary threshold โ generally around AED 4,000 a month if housing is provided, or AED 10,000 if it is not. You sponsor your spouse and children as dependants, each with their own documentation and medical steps.
Do I need UAE experience to get a job in Dubai?
Not necessarily. Some roles request it where local regulations, codes or client relationships matter. But specialist technical skills, recognised certifications, multinational client experience and expertise that is hard to source all transfer locally well. Show how your Indian experience maps to the employer's problem.
Does working in Dubai lead to permanent residence?
Standard employment does not lead to automatic permanent residence or citizenship. The 10-year Golden Visa offers renewable, self-sponsored long-term residence for qualifying investors and professionals, and the Green Visa offers a flexible route for skilled workers and freelancers. For higher-skilled Indian professionals, these are the closest thing to long-term settlement.
Start your Dubai job search
The sequence is simple, even if the paperwork is not: get the offer first, start your attestation early, check whether your passport is ECR category, and never pay for a guaranteed job.
Workbeyond exists for the first step. Every role on the platform comes from an employer prepared to sponsor a work visa, so you are not guessing which Dubai listings are open to Indian applicants. Explore visa-sponsored jobs on Workbeyondย or check which visas you qualify for.
