Overview

Why UAE?

The UAE offers zero income tax, high salaries, and one of the world's fastest visa processing systems. Your employer applies for your employment visa through MOHRE (Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation) for mainland companies or through the relevant Free Zone authority, and processing takes 2–4 weeks. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the primary hiring hubs, with strong demand across technology, finance, engineering, construction, healthcare, and hospitality. The Golden Visa program offers 10-year renewable residency for skilled professionals earning AED 30,000+ basic monthly salary β€” providing long-term stability without employer-tied restrictions.

Dubai dominates finance, tech, logistics, and tourism. Abu Dhabi centres on oil and gas, government, defence, and increasingly technology and culture. Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah have growing manufacturing and logistics sectors at lower costs. English is the primary working language in most international companies and in daily life. Arabic is the official language, but it is not required for most professional roles or daily interactions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Key Highlights

What to know before you move

πŸ’°
Zero income tax
The UAE has no personal income tax. Your gross salary is your net salary. A 5% VAT applies to goods and services, and a 9% corporate tax applies to businesses, but neither affects your personal earnings.
⚑️
Visa processing takes 2–4 weeks
Your employer handles the entire visa process through MOHRE or the Free Zone authority. No labour market test, no points system, no lottery. If you have a job offer, the visa follows quickly.
πŸ₯
Health insurance is employer-provided
Private health insurance is mandatory in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Your employer must provide and pay for your coverage. Quality varies significantly between basic and comprehensive plans β€” check the policy details before accepting an offer.
🏠
Housing is your biggest expense
Dubai rents have risen sharply since 2022. A one-bedroom in Dubai Marina or Downtown costs AED 7,000–12,000 per month. Many employers offer a housing allowance as part of the package β€” negotiate this before you sign.
🌟
Golden Visa offers long-term stability
Skilled professionals earning AED 30,000+ basic monthly salary with a MOHRE Level 1 or 2 classification and a bachelor's degree can apply for the 10-year Golden Visa. It removes employer-tied residency restrictions.
⚠️
Your visa is tied to your employer
On a standard employment visa, your residency depends on your employer. If you are terminated, your visa is cancelled, and you typically have 30 days to find a new employer or leave. The Golden Visa removes this dependency.
Job Market

Top industries hiring internationally

Technology, finance, construction, and healthcare drive the UAE's international hiring. Over 85% of the UAE's population are expatriates, making it one of the most international labour markets in the world. Hiring is concentrated in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with Free Zones playing a significant role β€” DIFC, JAFZA, DMCC, and ADGM each have their own employment visa frameworks.

Visa Routes

Popular work visa programs for the UAE

The UAE's employment visa system is fast and employer-driven. Your employer applies for your visa β€” you do not apply independently. The main distinction is between Mainland visas (issued by MOHRE) and Free Zone visas (issued by the relevant Free Zone authority). The Golden Visa sits above both as a long-term self-sponsored residency for those who meet the salary and qualification thresholds. Use the Workbeyond Visa Explorer to match your profile to the right route.

The Process

Steps to move to the UAE with a job

These steps cover the employer-sponsored employment visa β€” the path Workbeyond is built to support. The UAE has one of the fastest and simplest employment visa processes in the world: from signed offer to arrival typically takes 3–6 weeks. There is no labour market test, no points system, and no lottery. Your employer handles almost the entire process. The Golden Visa is a separate long-term residency option for professionals who meet the salary, qualification, and classification requirements β€” see Section 5 for eligibility details.

Important:Β These steps must happen in order. Your employer must apply for your work permit and residence visa. You cannot self-sponsor a standard employment visa. The job offer comes first, every time.

Β

1
Find a visa-sponsored job
Search Workbeyond for visa-sponsored roles in the UAE. Every employer on Workbeyond has confirmed willingness to sponsor your employment visa, so you skip the work of verifying each company yourself. Filter by city, industry, and seniority level, then apply directly through the listing. When evaluating offers, look at the full package β€” basic salary, housing allowance, health insurance, annual flights, and education allowances all matter.
2
Accept your offer and your employer applies for your visa
Once you accept an offer, your employer applies for your entry permit through MOHRE (mainland) or the Free Zone authority. Your employer submits your employment contract, passport copy, degree certificates, and passport photos. For regulated professions (doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers), your employer also arranges professional licensing with the relevant UAE authority. Your employer pays all visa and processing fees by law.
3
Enter the UAE on your entry permit
Once the entry permit is approved, travel to the UAE within 60 days. Your entry permit is stamped on arrival. You can start work immediately. Within 60 days of arrival, you must complete the next steps to convert your entry permit into a residence visa.
4
Complete medical, Emirates ID, and residence visa
After arrival, complete a medical fitness test at an approved health centre, submit biometrics for your Emirates ID, and have your residence visa stamped. Your employer typically coordinates these steps. The medical test, Emirates ID, and visa stamping take 1–2 weeks total. Once complete, you are a legal UAE resident.
5
Set up your life
Open a UAE bank account (you need your Emirates ID and salary certificate), activate your employer-provided health insurance, and find housing. Most landlords require 1–4 cheques for the full annual rent upfront β€” this is the single biggest upfront cost for new arrivals. Negotiate whether your employer provides a housing advance or deposit support before you arrive.
Cost of Living

What does life cost in the UAE?

The UAE has no income tax, but the cost of living β€” particularly in Dubai β€” is high. Housing is the largest expense and is structured differently from Europe: most landlords require annual rent paid in 1–4 cheques upfront, not monthly instalments. Dubai Marina, Downtown, and JBR are premium areas. Discovery Gardens and International City are budget options. Abu Dhabi is 10–20% cheaper than Dubai for housing.

On a monthly salary of AED 20,000 (AED 240,000 per year), your take-home is AED 20,000 β€” no tax deductions. A housing allowance of AED 5,000–8,000 per month is common on top of basic salary. Without a housing allowance, rent in Dubai consumes 35–50% of a mid-level salary.

ExpenseMonthly cost
Rent β€” 1-bed city centre AED 5,000–AED 12,000
Groceries AED 1,200–AED 2,000
Public transport monthly pass AED 350 (Dubai Metro/bus Nol card; most residents drive β€” car costs AED 2,000–4,000/month including fuel and insurance)
Health insurance Employer-provided (mandatory); upgrading to a comprehensive plan costs AED 300–800/month if self-funded
Dining out β€” mid-range meal AED 50–AED 100
Income tax AED 0
