Overview

Why Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia is undergoing the largest economic transformation in the Middle East. Vision 2030 is driving hundreds of billions of dollars in investment across mega-projects (NEOM, The Red Sea, Qiddiya, Diriyah Gate), entertainment, tourism, technology, healthcare, and financial services. This has created unprecedented demand for international professionals β€” particularly in engineering, construction, IT, healthcare, finance, and project management. The country has zero personal income tax, and high-skilled roles pay SAR 15,000+ per month (SAR 180,000+ per year). The visa system is employer-driven and processes quickly, but your residency is tied to your sponsor.

Riyadh is the primary hiring hub and is rapidly positioning itself as a regional business capital β€” the government now requires companies with regional headquarters to base them in Riyadh. Jeddah centres on logistics, trade, and Red Sea tourism. The Eastern Province (Dammam, Dhahran, Al Khobar) dominates oil, gas, and petrochemicals. NEOM and the Red Sea coast are new hiring locations for mega-project construction and hospitality. English is widely used in professional settings, particularly in international companies and technical roles.

Key Highlights

What to know before you move

πŸ’°
Zero income tax
Saudi Arabia has no personal income tax. Your gross salary is your net salary. Employers pay a monthly expatriate levy, but this does not affect your take-home pay.
πŸ—οΈ
Vision 2030 is driving massive demand
Hundreds of billions of dollars in investment across NEOM, The Red Sea, Qiddiya, and Riyadh's transformation are creating tens of thousands of roles in engineering, construction, IT, healthcare, and finance.
πŸ“‹
New skill-based classification system
Since 2025, work permits use three tiers: High-Skilled (degree + 5 years experience + SAR 15,000+/month), Skilled (secondary education + 2 years + SAR 7,000–14,999), and Basic. Your tier affects visa conditions and mobility.
πŸ₯
Health insurance is employer-provided
Private health insurance is mandatory under CCHI regulations. Your employer must provide and pay for coverage. Quality varies significantly β€” check the policy's hospital network and coverage limits before accepting.
🌟
Premium Residency removes employer ties
The Premium Residency program offers long-term or unlimited residency without a sponsor. Qualifying skilled professionals can live, work, and change employers freely. Costs SAR 100,000/year (limited) or SAR 800,000 one-time (unlimited).
⚠️
Your visa is tied to your employer
On a standard employment visa, your Iqama (residence permit) depends on your sponsor. Job transfers require completing 1 year with your current employer or contract expiry. If you are terminated, your employer cancels your Iqama and you must find a new sponsor or leave.
Job Market

Top industries hiring internationally

Vision 2030 has reshaped Saudi Arabia's job market. Engineering, construction, and project management lead international hiring as mega-projects scale up. Technology hiring is accelerating as Riyadh positions itself as a regional tech hub. Healthcare demand is driven by population growth and new hospital and medical city projects. The government's requirement for regional headquarters to be based in Riyadh has brought hundreds of multinational employers into the market since 2024.

Visa Routes

Popular work visa programs for Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's work visa system is employer-driven. Your employer (sponsor) applies for your work visa and Iqama through MHRSD and MOFA. Since 2025, all work permits follow a skill-based classification tied to the Saudi Standard Classification of Occupations (SSCO). The Premium Residency program offers an alternative for high-earning professionals who want independence from a single employer. Use the Workbeyond Visa Explorer to match your profile to the right route.

The Process

Steps to move to Saudi Arabia with a job

These steps cover the employer-sponsored employment visa β€” the path Workbeyond is built to support. From signed offer to arrival typically takes 4–8 weeks once your employer has the necessary approvals. The employer handles almost the entire process through MHRSD and MOFA. Your main responsibility is attending the Saudi embassy for visa stamping and completing medical requirements after arrival. If you are exploring employer-independent routes such as the Premium Residency or Freelancer Visa, visit our Saudi Arabia visas page for guidance.

These steps must happen in order. Your employer must secure block visa approval from MHRSD and visa authorisation from MOFA before you can attend the Saudi embassy. You cannot self-sponsor a standard employment visa. The job offer and the employer's approvals come first.

1
Find a visa-sponsored job
Search Workbeyond for visa-sponsored roles in Saudi Arabia. Every employer on Workbeyond has confirmed willingness to sponsor your employment visa and Iqama. Filter by city, industry, and seniority level, then apply directly through the listing. When evaluating offers, look at the full package β€” basic salary, housing allowance, transport allowance, annual flights, and health insurance all matter. Negotiate before you sign.
2
Accept your offer and your employer secures approvals
Once you accept, your employer applies for block visa approval through MHRSD's Qiwa platform, then obtains visa authorisation from MOFA. Your employer classifies your role under the SSCO skill tiers and confirms Nitaqat compliance. This stage takes 1–3 weeks. Your employer handles the entire process.
3
Attend the Saudi embassy for visa stamping
Once MOFA issues the visa authorisation, attend the Saudi embassy or consulate in your country. Bring your passport, degree certificates (attested by the Saudi Cultural AttachΓ© in your country), a medical certificate from an approved clinic, passport photos, and your signed employment contract in Arabic. The embassy stamps your work visa. Attestation of degree certificates can take 2–4 weeks β€” start this early.
4
Arrive and complete Iqama issuance
Travel to Saudi Arabia on your work visa. Within 90 days, your employer arranges your medical fitness test, biometric registration at the Jawazat (passport office), and Iqama issuance. The Iqama is your primary identification document β€” you need it for banking, housing, driving, and all government services. Keep it with you at all times.
5
Set up your life
Open a Saudi bank account (Al Rajhi, SNB, and Riyad Bank all accept new Iqama holders), activate your employer-provided health insurance, and find housing. Many employers provide a housing allowance or company accommodation. If renting independently, expect to pay 1–3 months' rent upfront. Register on the Absher platform β€” this is the government's digital services portal for renewing your Iqama, managing exit/re-entry visas, and handling most administrative tasks.
Cost of Living

What does life cost in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia is moderately affordable compared to the UAE, Singapore, or Western Europe, though costs have risen sharply in Riyadh since 2023 as the city's population and international presence grow. Riyadh is the most expensive city. Jeddah is 10–20% cheaper for housing. The Eastern Province (Dammam, Al Khobar) is more affordable still. Many employers provide housing allowances or company accommodation, which significantly reduces your largest expense.

On a high-skilled salary of SAR 20,000/month (SAR 240,000/year), your take-home is SAR 20,000 β€” no tax deductions. With a housing allowance of SAR 5,000–8,000/month on top, most professionals can cover rent, food, transport, and significant savings. The ability to save is one of Saudi Arabia's biggest financial advantages over higher-tax destinations.
