Software engineering in the United Kingdom
If you have read our page on software jobs in the United States, the first thing worth saying about Britain is what it does not have: a lottery. There is no cap, no annual draw, and no element of luck in whether a qualifying offer turns into a visa. Meet the rules and you go.
What Britain has instead is a threshold, and it is a strict one. Most sponsored roles must be graduate-level and pay the higher of £41,700 or the going rate for that occupation — and the going rate is where applications quietly die. People check the headline figure, see an offer above it, and relax. If the going rate for their occupation code is higher, the offer never qualified at all.
Two routes need no employer whatsoever. Global Talent is for engineers with a record of achievement — significant open-source work, published research, patents, senior roles at recognised companies — and is granted on endorsement rather than a job offer. The High Potential Individual route is open to recent graduates of highly ranked universities anywhere in the world, again with no sponsor and no job required. Both let you arrive first and find work as someone who already has the right to work.
Decisions are fast. A Skilled Worker application made from outside the UK is usually decided within about three weeks of biometrics, and you can apply up to three months before your start date.
The employer must hold a sponsor licence, and the Home Office publishes the register publicly. Roughly 100,000 organisations hold one. Holding a licence is not the same as being willing to use it for a particular hire — that is a separate decision, usually about cost — but it is a free check that removes most wasted applications before you make them.
Every role on this page is with an employer that either states sponsorship outright or appears in the public record as having sponsored before.
Three routes, and two need no job offer
Most engineers assume the Skilled Worker visa is the only way in. It is the largest route and the one most employers use, but it is also the only one of the three that requires an employer at all.
Skilled Worker Visa. The main employer-sponsored route. Needs a licensed sponsor, a graduate-level role, and a salary at the higher of £41,700 or the going rate for the occupation code. No cap and no draw — a qualifying offer proceeds. Decisions from outside the UK usually come within about three weeks of biometrics, and it leads to settlement after five years.
Global Talent Visa. For engineers with a demonstrable record in digital technology. Granted on endorsement by a designated body rather than a job offer, so there is no employer, no salary threshold and no sponsorship cost. You can work for anyone, change jobs freely, or be self-employed.
High Potential Individual. For graduates of highly ranked global universities within the last five years. No job offer, no sponsor and no minimum salary — you arrive with permission to work and then look. Time-limited, but it converts into Skilled Worker once you have an offer, and applying from inside the UK with existing work rights is far easier than applying from abroad.
For professionals with a job offer from a UK Home Office licensed sponsor. Covers the vast majority of professional roles, including healthcare, tech, finance, and education.
The UK's dedicated visa for doctors, nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals. Lower fees, no NHS surcharge, and faster processing.
Move to the UK without employer sponsorship if you can prove you are a leader or rising talent in research, arts or digital technology. No salary threshold applies, but endorsement evidence is demanding.
The UK's post-study work visa for international graduates of UK universities. No job offer, no sponsor, no salary threshold — you can work in any role, be self-employed, or look for work. Valid for 2 years (3 for PhD).
The UK's visa for recent graduates of the world's top-ranked overseas universities. No job offer, no sponsor, no salary threshold — you can work, be self-employed, or start a business.

Four things that change how you apply
Software jobs in the UK — common questions
Yes, and the UK is one of the more predictable places to do it. There is no cap and no lottery — if an employer holds a sponsor licence, the role is graduate-level, and the salary clears the higher of £41,700 or the going rate, the visa follows. The constraint is finding an employer willing to sponsor, not luck.
Fundamentally. The main American route, the H-1B, is capped at 85,000 places and allocated by random draw, so a strong candidate with a real offer can still be refused by chance. Britain has no equivalent. The trade is that UK salary thresholds are strict and salaries are lower than American ones.
For Skilled Worker, the role must be graduate-level but you do not always need a degree yourself — experience can carry you where the employer can show the role sits at that level. Global Talent is explicitly open to people without formal qualifications if the record of achievement is there. The High Potential Individual route is the exception: it is defined by your degree and the university that awarded it.
Sponsored engineering salaries generally start around the £41,700 threshold and run well beyond it in London and in finance and AI. They are lower than American equivalents and higher than most of Europe. Weigh them against rent rather than converting to your home currency — a strong salary in Manchester and the same figure in London are different jobs financially.
A Skilled Worker decision from outside the UK is usually made within about three weeks of biometrics, and you can apply up to three months before the start date on your Certificate of Sponsorship. The slow part is usually finding the offer, not the visa. Do not resign until the visa is granted.
Yes. Partners and children under 18 can come as dependants on all three routes, and partners can work without restriction. That is more generous than several comparable countries and is worth factoring into any comparison with the US or the Gulf.
