What is the UK High Potential Individual Visa?
The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa allows recent graduates of the world's top overseas universities to live and work in the UK without a job offer, employer sponsorship, or salary threshold. Your university must appear on the Home Office Global Universities List — a list of approximately 80 institutions ranked in the top 100 globally by at least 2 of the 3 major ranking systems (QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities).
You must have been awarded your qualification within the last 5 years. The visa is valid for 2 years (3 for PhD), cannot be extended, and can only be held once. An annual cap of 8,000 applications was introduced from 4 November 2025 — the cap year runs from 1 November to 31 October, and applications lodged after the limit is reached are rejected as invalid rather than refused.
There is no salary threshold. You can work in any role at any salary, take multiple jobs, be self-employed, or start a business. The only restriction is that you cannot work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.

Who qualifies
You must meet four requirements for the HPI visa. The visa is points-based — you must score 70 points: 50 for the qualifying degree, 10 for English at B2, and 10 for financial maintenance. You can only hold HPI permission once — it cannot be renewed or applied for a second time.
You must have been awarded a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD (or equivalent) by a university that appears on the Home Office Global Universities List for the academic year your qualification was awarded. The list updates each November and currently includes about 80 institutions.
You must demonstrate English at B2 level (upper-intermediate) in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This was raised from B1 to B2 on 8 January 2026 for all new applications.
You must hold at least £1,270 in a personal bank account for 28 consecutive days, ending no earlier than 31 days before the application date.
You are exempt if you have been in the UK with valid immigration permission for at least 12 continuous months at the date of application.
The HPI visa can only be granted once. You cannot apply if you have previously held permission under the HPI route, the Graduate route, or the Doctorate Extension Scheme. This prevents stacking multiple post-study routes.

Application timeline
From starting the Ecctis verification to receiving the visa typically takes 5–12 weeks. The Ecctis step is the main variable — the visa application itself is straightforward.

Confirm that your university appears on the Global Universities List for the academic year your degree was awarded (check gov.uk). Apply to Ecctis for a verification certificate confirming your degree's UK equivalence. Standard processing takes 15–20 working days. Request English language confirmation at the same time if relying on your degree as proof of English.

No. The HPI visa cannot be extended and can only be held once per person. To remain in the UK after it expires, you must switch to another visa route before the HPI expires.
The most common switch is to the Skilled Worker visa (requires a sponsored job offer meeting the salary threshold). This is a significant advantage over the Graduate visa, where only existing Student dependants can apply.

If you graduated from a top global university and have never lived in the UK, the HPI gives you the right to come and work without first having a job offer.
Currently, no universities from India, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Pakistan, or the Philippines appear on the Global Universities List. This means the HPI route is not available to graduates of institutions in these countries, regardless of the quality of the institution or the individual's qualifications.
If you have a UK degree, the Graduate visa may be an option. If you have a job offer from a UK employer, the Skilled Worker visa is the standard route.
Both are unsponsored, temporary, non-extendable work visas with the same duration (2 years, or 3 years for PhD). The key differences:
