๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ How to Get a Job in Canada from India in 2026

Indian professional looking for jobs

Canada works backwards from everywhere else. In the UK, the Gulf or most of Europe, you find an employer willing to sponsor you, and the visa follows. In Canada, the main route runs the other way: you qualify for permanent residence on your own profile, you arrive with the right to work anywhere, and then you look for a job like any other resident.

That inversion is the single most useful thing to understand, because it means the months most Indian applicants spend hunting for a Canadian employer are usually months spent on the wrong problem.

It also means being honest about something: Canada in 2026 is harder than Canada in 2022. Admission targets have been cut, provincial allocations halved, and score cut-offs have risen. The route still works. It just rewards preparation far more than it used to.

Express Entry: no job offer required

IRCC Express Entry is an online pool, not an application. You submit a profile; it is scored against the Comprehensive Ranking System, and IRCC periodically invites the highest-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residence.

Three programs feed the pool. Most Indian applicants enter through the Federal Skilled Worker program, which needs skilled work experience, language test results, an education assessment and proof of funds โ€” but no Canadian employer and no job offer at all.

Your CRS score is built from age, education, language ability, work experience and a handful of combination bonuses. Age is the part you cannot change, and it matters: scoring peaks in the twenties and declines steadily from about thirty, which is the strongest argument for starting early rather than perfecting your file.

The 2025 change that catches people out

Until March 2025, a valid job offer added 50 or 200 points to your CRS. Those points were removed. A job offer now adds nothing to your Express Entry score.

This matters enormously for Indian applicants, because an entire grey market existed around it โ€” agents selling LMIA-backed job offers for large sums precisely to capture those 50 points. That market was the reason the points were removed. Anyone still offering to sell you an LMIA for CRS purposes is selling something that is both unlawful and now worthless.

A genuine job offer is still valuable for other reasons โ€” it can support a work permit, and it is how you actually earn a living โ€” but it is no longer a scoring shortcut.

Category-based draws: the real lever

This is the most useful mechanism available and the least understood.

Alongside general draws, IRCC runs category-based draws aimed at specific occupations and skills, with cut-off scores substantially below the general round. Categories are set each year and have included healthcare and social services, STEM occupations, skilled trades, agriculture and agri-food, education, and โ€” most significantly โ€” French-language proficiency.

If your occupation falls in a targeted category, you may be invited at a score that would never clear a general draw. Check the current categories before you assume your score is too low, because they change and your occupation may have been added.

French is the biggest single lever for Indian applicants

Almost nobody acts on this, and it is worth more than any other investment available to you.

French-language draws have repeatedly had cut-offs far beneath the general rounds โ€” frequently by a hundred points or more. Reaching roughly NCLC 7 in French also adds direct CRS points on top. You do not need to be fluent, you do not need to move to Quebec, and Indian applicants are barely represented in that pool.

Six to twelve months of serious French study will usually do more for your chances than anything else you could spend that time on โ€” more than another degree, more than another year of experience, and far more than any agent. If your score is stuck in the 440s and the general cut-off is above 500, this is the answer.

What to do first: the ECA and the right English test

Two preparatory steps gate everything, and Indian applicants get both wrong routinely.

Educational Credential Assessment. Your Indian degree must be assessed against the Canadian standard before it scores. World Education Services is the most used provider for Indian qualifications. The step that takes time is not the assessment itself but your university sending documents directly to WES โ€” Indian institutions vary enormously in how quickly they do this, and it is entirely outside your control. Start it first.

Book IELTS General Training, not Academic. This is the most common avoidable error. Express Entry accepts IELTS General Training; the Academic module that Indian students take for university admission does not count. People book Academic out of habit, score well, and have to sit the test again.

Aim high rather than adequate. Language is the most points-dense part of the CRS and the part you can most reliably improve. Reaching CLB 9 โ€” roughly IELTS 8 in listening and 7 across reading, writing and speaking โ€” unlocks a large block of points including the skill-transferability bonuses. The gap between a modest score and a strong one is often the gap between sitting in the pool and being invited.

You will also need proof of funds for the Federal Skilled Worker program โ€” around CAD 15,000 for a single applicant, more with family, updated annually โ€” unless you hold valid Canadian authorisation to work.

Provincial nomination, and why it is harder now

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, which in practice guarantees an invitation. The Provincial Nominee Program lets provinces select for their own labour needs, and several run streams aligned directly to the Express Entry pool โ€” Ontario for tech and in-demand skills, British Columbia for technology, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Atlantic provinces for a broader range.

Be realistic about the current position. Provincial allocations were cut sharply for 2025 as part of Canada's reduced immigration levels, so nominations are considerably scarcer than the older guidance online suggests. Streams open and close at short notice, and some are effectively continuous lotteries.

The practical approach is to keep an Express Entry profile live, express interest in provinces that match your occupation, and treat a nomination as a strong possibility rather than a plan.

Work permits: the other way in

If permanent residence is slow, a work permit can get you there sooner โ€” and Canadian work experience then feeds back into your CRS through the Canadian Experience Class.

  • Global Talent Stream work permit โ€” a fast stream for tech and specialised roles, with processing measured in weeks rather than months. If you are a software engineer with an offer from a Canadian employer, this is usually the fastest route into the country.
  • LMIA-based high-wage work permit โ€” the standard employer-sponsored permit, where the employer proves no Canadian was available. Slower, and the employer carries the cost and the paperwork.
  • Intra-company transfer โ€” substantially under-used in guidance and heavily used in practice. If you work for an Indian IT services firm or a multinational with a Canadian entity, an internal transfer is often the single easiest path available to you, and it does not require an LMIA. If your employer has a Canadian office, ask before you do anything else.

Where Indian professionals are hired

  • Technology โ€” Toronto, Waterloo, Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa. Software engineering, cloud, data, cybersecurity and machine learning. The largest single field for Indian arrivals.
  • Engineering โ€” civil, mechanical, electrical and process, with provincial licensing required to use the title (see below).
  • Healthcare โ€” in demand everywhere and licensed provincially, which is the real barrier rather than immigration.
  • Finance and accounting โ€” Toronto is the centre. CPA Canada has assessment pathways, and Indian CA and ACCA qualifications carry recognisable weight.
  • Skilled trades โ€” genuinely short-staffed, targeted by category draws, and consistently overlooked by Indian applicants who assume Canada only wants graduates.

Licensing is provincial, and it will surprise you

Immigration and the right to practise are two different things. Canada regulates professions at the provincial level, so permanent residence gives you the right to work in the country but not automatically the right to work as an engineer, doctor, nurse, pharmacist, teacher or accountant.

Engineers need P.Eng registration from the province they settle in. Healthcare professionals register with the provincial regulator. Each has its own examinations, experience requirements and timelines.

The failure mode is well documented: highly qualified people arrive as permanent residents, discover licensing takes two or three years, and take survival jobs in the meantime. Start the licensing conversation with the provincial regulator before you choose a province, not after you land โ€” requirements differ between them, and the difference can be a year of your life.

Finding the jobs

Once you hold permanent residence, you apply as a resident and sponsorship is irrelevant. Before that, you need employers open to hiring internationally โ€” and Canadian employers signal this with phrases like โ€œLMIA support availableโ€, โ€œopen to candidates requiring a work permitโ€ and โ€œrelocation assistanceโ€. Workbeyond lists roles from employers open to international candidates. Browse visa-sponsored jobs on Workbeyond โ†’

One cultural note worth acting on: Canadian employers weigh Canadian experience heavily, and remote contract work for Canadian clients before you move genuinely counts toward answering that objection.

Agents, consultants and what is actually legal

Indian applicants are targeted more than any other nationality, and the boundary is clearer than most people realise.

  • Only a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant or a Canadian lawyer may represent you for a fee. Verify anyone against the CICC public register โ€” it is free and takes a minute.
  • Buying an LMIA or a job offer is unlawful, and since March 2025 it also buys you nothing on your CRS. Both parties can face consequences and your application can be refused for misrepresentation.
  • Nobody can guarantee an invitation. Draws are score-ranked and published. A guarantee is a lie.
  • Misrepresentation carries a five-year ban. An agent who inflates your experience is risking your future, not theirs.
  • You can do the entire Express Entry process yourself. Many people do, and IRCC's guidance is written to be followed without help.

Five mistakes that cost Indian applicants most

  1. Hunting for a Canadian employer first. The main route needs no job offer, and since 2025 an offer adds nothing to your score.
  2. Booking IELTS Academic. Express Entry needs General Training.
  3. Ignoring French. The largest available score lever, and almost unused by Indian applicants.
  4. Leaving the ECA late. Your university's document dispatch is the slowest step and you cannot speed it up.
  5. Not checking provincial licensing before choosing a province. This is what turns qualified arrivals into survival-job statistics.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a job offer to move to Canada from India?

No. Express Entry's Federal Skilled Worker program requires no employer and no job offer. You qualify on your own profile, arrive as a permanent resident, and job-hunt as a resident.

Does a job offer still increase my CRS score?

No. IRCC removed the arranged-employment points in March 2025. A job offer remains useful for a work permit and for earning a living, but it no longer raises your ranking.

Which English test do I need?

IELTS General Training or CELPIP. The IELTS Academic module used for university admission is not accepted for Express Entry.

How much does French actually help?

Considerably. It adds direct CRS points and makes you eligible for French-language category draws, which have repeatedly had cut-offs far below the general rounds. For a stuck score, it is usually the highest-return option available.

How long does WES take?

The assessment itself is quick once documents arrive. The delay is your university sending transcripts directly, which varies widely between Indian institutions. Start it before anything else.

Is Canada still accepting immigrants?

Yes, but at reduced levels. Admission targets were cut for 2025 onward, and provincial allocations halved, so cut-off scores are higher, and nominations scarcer than guidance written before 2024 suggests.

Can I work as an engineer or doctor straight away?

Not automatically. Professions are licensed provincially, separately from immigration. Check the requirements of the regulator in your intended province before you choose where to settle.

Do I need an agent?

No. You can apply yourself. If you do use someone, they must be a CICC-regulated consultant or a Canadian lawyer โ€” verify them on the public register.

Should I apply to Canada or the UK?

They suit different situations. Canada gives permanent residence without an employer but takes longer and rewards preparation. The UK is faster and employer-dependent, with no lottery and a three-week visa decision. See how to get a job in the UK from India for that comparison.

Where to start

Three things this week: run the official CRS calculator to find out where you actually stand, start your WES assessment, and book IELTS General Training. If your score comes back short of recent cut-offs, the honest next step is French rather than another certification.

Not sure which routes you qualify for? The free visa eligibility checker takes four questions. For provinces, cities and salary bands, see the Canada destination guide.
