Since Brexit, a British passport no longer lets you live or work in Spain freely — UK citizens are now third-country nationals who need a visa for any stay beyond 90 days. This guide covers every 2026 route, which ones actually permit work, and how to move to Spain with a job.

What changed for UK citizens after Brexit

Since 1 January 2021, UK citizens have been treated as non-EU nationals for Spanish immigration. There is no longer an "EU citizen registration" path — a British passport is not a residence permit. You can still visit Spain for up to 90 days in any 180-day period visa-free, but that window is for holidays, house-viewings, and research trips. It is not a way to live or work in Spain.

To stay longer, you need one of a handful of residence routes. Which one fits depends on a single question: how will you support yourself in Spain — through work, remote income, or passive means? That question sorts the entire visa landscape, so it is where this guide starts.

One change to factor into your research trips: ETIAS, the EU’s new travel authorisation, is expected to begin operating in the last quarter of 2026, followed by a transitional period in which it is optional. Current EU planning has it becoming mandatory for UK visitors around April 2027, with at least six months’ notice of the exact date. It costs €20 (free under 18 and over 70), lasts three years or until your passport expires, and is a pre-screening rather than a visa — it has no bearing on any of the residence routes below.

The Spain visa routes for UK citizens in 2026

There are five main long-stay routes. Only some let you work, and that distinction matters more than any other.

If you want to work in Spain

The work visa (job offer required). If a Spanish employer hires you, they apply for a work permit on your behalf before you travel. This is the route for anyone whose plan is to be employed in Spain by a Spanish company. The employer initiates it; you cannot apply independently. Our Spain General Work Visa page sets out the requirements in detail.

The Highly Qualified Professional route. For senior or specialised roles, the HQP route under Ley 14/2013 is faster than the standard work permit and is processed by Spain’s dedicated large-employer unit (UGE-CE). If your role qualifies, it is worth asking prospective employers about by name — see the Highly Qualified Professional Visa page.

The Digital Nomad Visa (remote work for non-Spanish employers). If you work remotely for UK or international companies, this is your route. You must show income of roughly €2,849 per month — 200% of Spain’s minimum wage, calculated on the annual figure because the SMI is paid in 14 instalments — prove your work is mainly for companies outside Spain, and carry private health insurance. It is initially valid for one year, convertible to a three-year residence permit, and, unusually, can be applied for from within Spain during a 90-day tourist stay. It also unlocks the "Beckham Law" flat 24% tax regime for eligible newcomers.

If you don’t need to work

The Non-Lucrative Visa (passive income only). Designed for retirees and the financially independent, this route requires passive income of at least €28,800 per year (€2,400 per month) for one applicant, plus €7,200 per year (€600 per month) per dependant — 400% and 100% of the 2026 IPREM, respectively. The income must be genuinely passive: pensions, rentals, dividends, investments. It does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer.

This is the single most common mistake UK movers make — applying for the NLV while intending to work remotely. If your income comes from work, this is the wrong route, and you want the Digital Nomad Visa instead.

The remaining routes. The Student Visa allows study plus limited work rights, and Family Reunification applies if you have a Spain-resident sponsor. The Entrepreneur Visa under the Startup Law suits those launching an innovative business. Note that the Golden Visa was permanently closed to new applicants in April 2025 — if an older guide still lists it, that guide is out of date.

Which route is right for you?

A quick decision framework:

You have a Spanish job offer → Work visa (your employer applies).

You work remotely for UK or international clients → Digital Nomad Visa.

You are retired or live on passive income → Non-Lucrative Visa.

You are launching a business → Entrepreneur Visa.

You are joining family already resident in Spain → Family Reunification.

The overwhelming majority of working-age UK movers fall into the first two. If that is you, the rest of this guide focuses on the part that actually gets you there: finding the job or the income that anchors your application.

What it actually costs to live in Spain

The visa thresholds tell you what you must prove. They are not what life costs. Budget separately for the monthly run rate, the paperwork, and health cover.

Rent and monthly budget

Spain is cheaper than the UK on most lines, but the gap has narrowed sharply in the big cities. A single person’s all-in monthly cost is commonly put at around €1,590 in 2026, with rent the dominant variable.

Estimates for a one-bedroom flat in the city centre vary widely depending on the source and how recently the data was gathered — a spread worth taking seriously rather than averaging away:

Madrid — roughly €800–€1,200 on broader 2026 surveys, though mid-2026 listings data puts it nearer €1,490.

Barcelona — comparable to Madrid, with mid-2026 listings around €1,650.

Valencia — roughly €550–€750, around 40% below Madrid, which is why it has become the default for cost-conscious movers.

Seville — roughly €500–€700.

Nationally, the average is near €877 in a city centre and €688 outside it. If your budget depends on the lower end of these ranges, look beyond Madrid and Barcelona before you commit to a city.

Visa and paperwork costs

The consular fees are small. The surrounding paperwork is what adds up.

Digital Nomad Visa — around €80.

NIE, your foreigner tax number — a state fee of roughly €10–€12, paid on form 790 (código 012).

TIE card, your physical residence card — roughly €12–€16 initially and more on renewal. Published rates differ between sources and are reset periodically, so confirm the current tasa before paying.

Apostilles, sworn translations, criminal-record and medical certificates — the real expense. Depending on route and family size, all-in totals commonly land somewhere between roughly £700 and £6,500.

Health insurance

Private Spanish health insurance is mandatory on the Non-Lucrative, Digital Nomad and Student routes, and the premium is driven almost entirely by age:

Under 40 — from around €50 per month

Thirties and forties — roughly €80–€160 per month

Fifties — roughly €130–€220 per month

Sixty and over — roughly €180–€350 per month

Across all ages, that is roughly €600–€4,500 per person per year. The policy must carry no co-payments and no waiting periods to satisfy the consulate.

If you take the work-visa route and are employed in Spain, you join the public health system through social security contributions instead — an underrated financial advantage of being employed locally rather than remotely.

How to find a job in Spain as a UK citizen

For the work-visa route, everything hinges on securing a Spanish employer willing to sponsor the permit. That is the hard part, and it is where most relocation guides go quiet.

Where the English-speaking roles are

Tech, tourism and hospitality, international schools, customer-support and shared-service hubs for multinationals, and English-teaching are where UK citizens most often find sponsored work without fluent Spanish. They cluster geographically too: Madrid for corporate and finance roles, Barcelona for tech and startups, Valencia for a growing startup scene at markedly lower cost, and Málaga for the fast-expanding tech corridor on the Costa del Sol.

How much Spanish you actually need

Spanish matters more the further you get from those sectors. Engineering, product and research roles inside multinationals often run in English day-to-day. Client-facing, healthcare, legal and public-sector work will expect working Spanish, usually B2 or above. If the work-visa route is your plan, treat language investment as part of that plan rather than something to sort out after arrival.

The Highly Qualified Professional shortcut

If your role is senior or specialised, the HQP route is handled by Spain’s large-employer unit rather than the standard provincial process, and is materially faster. Many employers do not raise it themselves, so ask early whether your role qualifies.

What Spanish employers expect from a UK application

A Spanish CV usually runs to two pages, and photographs remain common though no longer universally expected. State your right-to-work position plainly and early: which route you intend to use, and whether you need sponsorship. Since Brexit, "I hold a UK passport" no longer answers that question, and leaving it implicit costs you interviews. Expect hiring to move more slowly than in the UK, and to stall almost entirely through August.

Workbeyond lists visa-sponsored roles with employers open to hiring internationally, including across Spain and the wider EU. Browsing live roles is the fastest way to see which employers actually sponsor, and what they pay, before you commit to the move. Browse visa-sponsored jobs →

For the wider picture of which European countries sponsor most readily, our visa sponsorship jobs in Europe guide covers the whole continent, and the Spain destination guide covers living and working there in more depth.

The application process, step by step

Choose your route using the framework above — this determines everything that follows.

Prepare your documents. Most UK residence permits must be initiated at a Spanish Consulate in the UK before you travel — the Non-Lucrative and standard work visas especially. Documents must be complete, apostilled, and translated into Spanish before your consulate appointment.

Gather the evidentiary proof for your route: a job contract (work visa), remote-income evidence (Digital Nomad), or passive-income proof (NLV), plus private Spanish health insurance, a clean criminal record certificate, and a medical certificate.

Book your consulate appointment — but only once documents are complete. Slots are limited and hard to reschedule.

Travel and register. After approval, collect your visa, move to Spain, and complete local registration (padrón and TIE card) in your first weeks.

Spanish administrative culture rejects incomplete files by default. The single biggest cause of delay is an incomplete or incorrectly apostilled document set — not the decision itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can UK citizens still move to Spain after Brexit?

Yes. UK citizens can still move to Spain, but since Brexit they are treated as non-EU nationals and need a visa or residence permit for any stay beyond 90 days in a 180-day period. The main routes are the work visa, Digital Nomad Visa, Non-Lucrative Visa, and family reunification.

Can I work in Spain on a Non-Lucrative Visa?

No. The Non-Lucrative Visa prohibits all work, including remote work for a UK or foreign employer. If your income comes from employment or freelancing, you need the Digital Nomad Visa instead. Confusing the two is the most common — and most costly — mistake UK applicants make.

How much money do I need to move to Spain from the UK in 2026?

It depends on the route. The Non-Lucrative Visa requires around €28,800 per year in passive income for one person, plus €7,200 per dependant. The Digital Nomad Visa requires roughly €2,849 per month in remote-work income. The work visa has no personal income threshold — the salary comes from your Spanish job offer. Living costs are a separate question: budget around €1,590 a month for one person, plus €600–€4,500 a year for the private health insurance most routes require.

How long does a Spanish visa take to process?

Most residence applications are processed in roughly 2–12 weeks depending on the route and document completeness. The Digital Nomad Visa has a 20-working-day legal deadline but can run longer in practice. Incomplete document files are the main cause of delay.

Can I move to Spain without a job?

Yes, through the Non-Lucrative Visa (passive income), the Digital Nomad Visa (remote income from outside Spain), or the Student Visa. If you want to be employed by a Spanish company, you need a job offer and the work-visa route.

Does living in Spain affect my British citizenship?

No. Holding Spanish residence has no effect on your UK citizenship. Permanent residence in Spain is available after five years of continuous legal stay, and citizenship after ten years — though Spain generally requires renouncing other nationalities for naturalisation, so check current rules before planning around it.
