If you are an international professional planning a move to Germany — whether you are an Indian software engineer, a Filipino nurse, a Nigerian doctor, a US consultant, or a Pakistani specialist in any field where Germany is actively hiring — you have probably encountered three platforms repeatedly: Make it in Germany, Stepstone, and Workbeyond. The first question most people ask is which one to use. The honest answer is all three, because they are built for genuinely different parts of the same problem and choosing between them leaves gaps.

This guide explains what each platform is built for, what it isn't, and how to combine them into a workflow that covers the four things an international move to Germany actually requires: understanding the rules, finding the right job, identifying employers receptive to international applicants, and managing the home-country side of the process.

What you are actually trying to solve

A professional moving to Germany from outside the EU needs four things to align:

The right immigration route — EU Blue Card, Opportunity Card, Skilled Worker visa, or another category — matched to your qualification, salary, and home country.

A real job at the right level in a sector where Germany is hiring, ideally in a city where you would want to live.

An employer who is genuinely receptive to international hiring — Germany requires no sponsor licence (unlike the UK or Canada), but employer willingness to engage with relocation, document recognition, and language considerations still varies enormously.

The home-country pathway — Anabin recognition of your qualification, document apostille, police clearance, biometrics, and family-reunion documentation.

No single platform addresses all four. The three platforms in this comparison each cover a different subset.

Make it in Germany

Make it in Germany is the official German government portal for skilled non-EU workers, operated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) in partnership with the Federal Employment Agency. It exists explicitly to support international hiring into Germany and is free to use, multilingual (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, and several others), and the most authoritative source on German immigration rules outside the legal statutes themselves.

What Make it in Germany is built for

Understanding the rules. Whatever route you are considering — EU Blue Card, Opportunity Card, Skilled Worker visa for vocational qualifications, Job Seeker Visa, Section 16f visa for partial-qualification professionals — Make it in Germany explains it accurately, with current 2026 thresholds and links to the implementing legal provisions. The "Quick Check" tool provides a reasonable first-pass eligibility read-through in a few minutes, and the country-specific pages cover the practicalities of qualification recognition, language requirements, and family reunification.

The portal also offers an integrated job-search function that draws on the [Bundesagentur für Arbeit](→ https://www.arbeitsagentur.de) job database — Germany's official public employment agency. This database is the single largest job listing repository in Germany, with over 800,000 active vacancies at peak periods. The search is free, comprehensive in scope, and includes a filter for "internationally available" roles, though it relies on employer self-declaration.

What Make it in Germany is not built for

Curated international job search. The Bundesagentur für Arbeit data is comprehensive but uncurated for international applicants — most listings are in German, written for the domestic market, and don't surface English-language availability, sponsor receptivity, or the realistic likelihood that an employer will engage with a non-EU candidate. For someone using Make it in Germany as their primary job-search tool, the volume becomes a hindrance: filtering 800,000 listings down to the dozen genuinely accessible to a non-German speaker in your sector is more work than the platform is designed to support.

It is also not a profile-driven platform. There is no personal account that learns your preferences, surfaces relevant roles, alerts you to matching new listings, or saves application progress.

Use Make it in Germany for: understanding the rules, checking your eligibility, learning the official requirements, and getting baseline volume from the public job database.

Stepstone

Stepstone is the largest commercial job board in Germany, with roughly 60,000-70,000 active listings at any given time and the deepest employer relationships in the German private-sector market. It is dominant for white-collar, engineering, IT, management, and skilled professional roles, and it is the first commercial platform that German employers post to in many sectors.

What Stepstone is built for

Broad market coverage of the German private sector at the professional level. If you want to see what is being hired in your field across the German market, Stepstone is the most comprehensive single source. It is particularly strong in IT, engineering, finance, consulting, and senior corporate roles in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Düsseldorf. The platform offers detailed filtering by industry, function, region, salary range, and contract type, and many large German employers post directly to Stepstone before any other commercial channel.

Stepstone also surfaces a non-trivial number of English-language and international-friendly roles, particularly in tech and at multinational employers.

What Stepstone is not built for

International applicants specifically. The platform is built around the German domestic labour market, in German, for German-resident job seekers. The English-language interface exists, but the listings, employer communications, and application processes are predominantly in German. Many roles tagged "international" or "English-friendly" turn out to require working German for day-to-day collaboration, even where the formal job description is in English.

Like other generic boards, Stepstone offers no integration of current immigration rules into search. A listing at €42,000 might be technically attractive but falls below the EU Blue Card general threshold of €50,700, and Stepstone does not filter or flag that mismatch. The platform also does not surface qualification recognition status — a role might be open to international applicants in principle, but requires an Anabin-recognised degree that the applicant doesn't yet have evidence of.

Use Stepstone for: broad market coverage of German private-sector roles, particularly in IT, engineering, and senior corporate roles, once you have at least working-level German or you are specifically targeting English-operating multinationals.

Workbeyond

Workbeyond is built specifically for international professionals pursuing work abroad, with Germany as one of its core destinations alongside the UK, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Ireland, and others. Germany's positioning differs in shape from Workbeyond's UK or Australia positioning because Germany's immigration architecture is different.

What Workbeyond is built for

International applicant-specific search of the German market. Three things differentiate the approach:

Integrated immigration-rule context. Each listing is presented alongside the relevant visa route, and the platform's EU Blue Card and Opportunity Card guides are hosted on the same site as the listings. The candidate has the route and threshold context available without having to cross-reference Make it in Germany separately — though for the official text of the rules, Make it in Germany remains the authoritative source.

Home-country pathway integration. A listing for an Indian software engineer surfaces the relevant Anabin recognition status, the typical document timeline for Indian applicants, and the Indian-passport-specific considerations that don't appear on a generic listing. For a Filipino nurse, the DMW exit-clearance pathway is part of the application context. For a Nigerian doctor, the Approbation and Anerkennung process is surfaced alongside the role itself.

Employer receptivity to international hiring. Because Germany has no sponsor-licence regime, "verified sponsor" is not a meaningful filter as it is in the UK or Australia. Instead, Workbeyond filters for employers with a demonstrated track record of hiring internationally — those who have completed Blue Card or Opportunity Card processes, hold the required staff capacity for relocation and onboarding, and operate in English where the role requires it. This is the meaningful filter for Germany, and it is what the platform is built around.

What Workbeyond is not built for

The complete German market. Workbeyond is curated. Its total listing volume in Germany is smaller than Stepstone's or the Bundesagentur für Arbeit's by a substantial margin, because the platform deliberately filters out roles where international hiring is structurally implausible — government-sector roles requiring native German, security-clearance roles unavailable to non-EU candidates, and roles at employers with no operational pathway for relocation. For an applicant running an exhaustive sweep of every possible employer in Germany, Workbeyond is not the right primary source.

Workbeyond is also not the place to read the rules. The platform integrates rule context into its filters, but it does not aim to replace Make it in Germany as the official source — and shouldn't try to. Where the rules are the question, Make it in Germany is the answer.

Use Workbeyond for: a curated view of the German market focused on roles genuinely accessible to your nationality, qualification, and language profile, with destination and visa guides built into the platform alongside the listings.

In practice that means using all three: Make it in Germany for the rules, Stepstone for breadth in German, and Workbeyond to see which German employers are actually open to hiring someone who needs a visa. Browse visa-sponsored jobs in Germany →

The combined workflow

The three platforms cover the problem when used together. Here is what that workflow looks like in practice, by stage of the move.

Stage 1: research and eligibility (weeks 1-4)

Start at Make it in Germany. Use the Quick Check tool to confirm which immigration routes apply to your qualification, salary expectations, and home country. Read the official guidance on the EU Blue Card, Opportunity Card, and Skilled Worker visa. If qualification recognition is required, run your degree through Anabin and, if needed, start the ZAB Statement of Comparability process — this takes 3 months and is the gating step for many applications.

Use Stepstone in parallel for market reconnaissance: what salaries are German employers in your field actually offering, in which cities, at what seniority levels. This calibrates your expectations and identifies the salary band you need to target to clear the Blue Card threshold.

Stage 2: active application (weeks 4-16)

Workbeyond becomes your primary application platform. The roles surfaced are pre-filtered by your nationality, qualifications, and language profile, with immigration rules and home-country pathways integrated. Apply across the matched listings in parallel rather than serially — Germany's job market moves quickly, and a parallel approach materially reduces total elapsed time to offer.

Continue checking Stepstone for high-volume sweep coverage, particularly for roles at large employers that Workbeyond may not yet list. When you find a Stepstone role of interest, cross-check the employer's international-hiring receptivity (publicly available signals include past Blue Card hires on LinkedIn, English-language presence, and disclosed visa-sponsorship statements).

Use Make it in Germany for ongoing rule reference. Thresholds, requirements, and shortage-occupation lists update periodically, and the official source is where the current version always lives.

Stage 3: post-offer and arrival (weeks 16+)

Once you have an offer, Make it in Germany is the source of truth for the visa application process itself — required documents, embassy procedures, and post-arrival registration requirements. Stepstone and Workbeyond drop out of the picture at this stage; the work is now between you, your employer, and the German consular authorities.

Workbeyond may re-enter at the post-arrival stage if you transition to a Blue Card and start looking at lateral moves within Germany after the initial role.

Four questions to ask any platform you use for Germany

Whatever combination you settle on, five tests tell you whether each platform is built for your situation:

Does it integrate the EU Blue Card and Opportunity Card guides with the listings, or treat the rules as a separate help section?

Does it show English-operating roles vs roles requiring German fluency?

Does it treat your home country as an input, with pathway information specific to where you are applying from?

Does it surface the employer's track record in international hiring, or only the employer's self-declared willingness to sponsor?

A platform that answers yes to all four is built to address the problem an international professional moving to Germany faces. A platform that answers yes to two or three of them is a useful component of a multi-platform workflow.
