Overview

Why Sweden?

Sweden is one of Europe's most innovative economies, with global strength in technology (Spotify, Ericsson, Klarna), automotive (Volvo), life sciences, cleantech, and gaming. The work permit system underwent its biggest reform since 2008 on 1 June 2026: the minimum salary rose from 80% to 90% of the Swedish median wage (SEK 34,470/month), mandatory health insurance was introduced for stays under 1 year, and the EU Blue Card maximum validity was extended to 4 years. Twenty-seven shortage occupations qualify for a reduced threshold of 75% of the median. The reforms aim to prevent wage exploitation while keeping skilled migration open.

Stockholm is the primary hiring hub for tech, finance, and startups. Gothenburg centres on automotive (Volvo, Polestar) and engineering. Malmö has a growing tech and creative sector. Uppsala is strong in life sciences and pharmaceuticals. English is widely spoken and used in many international companies, but Swedish is the working language in most Swedish-owned businesses and is important for long-term career growth and social integration.

What to know before you move

🛂
Major reform took effect 1 June 2026
The minimum salary threshold rose from 80% to 90% of the Swedish median (SEK 34,470/month). Twenty-seven shortage occupations qualify for a reduced 75% threshold. All pending applications decided after 1 June are assessed under the new rules.
💰
No employer sponsorship licence required
Any Swedish employer can hire a non-EU worker. There is no sponsorship licence, accreditation, or pre-approval process for the employer. The work permit is tied to the employer and the specific role, but the employer doesn't need government certification to hire you.
👨‍👩‍👧
Strong parental leave
Sweden offers 480 days of parental leave, shared between parents, at 80% of salary for 390 days. This is one of the most generous parental leave systems in the world and applies equally to work permit holders.
📋
Permit is no longer tied to one employer
Under the June 2026 reforms, work permits now offer enhanced portability. You are no longer locked to a single employer for the entire permit period. An extended unemployment grace period of up to 6 months (previously 3) gives you time to find a new role if you lose your job.
🏥
Universal healthcare for registered residents
Once you register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and receive a personnummer, you access Sweden's public healthcare system. For stays under 1 year, comprehensive private health insurance is now mandatory under the June 2026 rules.
⚠️
Two occupations are now excluded entirely
Since 1 June 2026, work permits can no longer be granted for forest berry pickers or personal assistants. If you are considering either role, there is no available work permit route.

Top industries hiring internationally

Technology, automotive, life sciences, and engineering drive Sweden's international hiring. Stockholm is Europe's second-largest tech hub by unicorn output (after London). Gothenburg's automotive cluster is transitioning to electric vehicles. Sweden's engineering and manufacturing base remains strong, with genuine shortages in STEM, healthcare, and skilled trades.

The Process

Steps to move to Sweden with a job

These steps cover the employer-sponsored work permit — the path Workbeyond is built to support. From signed offer to arrival typically takes 2–5 months, depending on Migrationsverket processing times. Sweden's system is employer-initiated but does not require any employer licence — any company with a Swedish business registration can hire you. The June 2026 salary threshold change applies to all decisions issued after 1 June, including applications submitted earlier.

Important: These steps must happen in order. Your employer creates your application in Migrationsverket's system and submits the job offer details. You then complete and submit the application yourself. The job offer comes first.

1
Find a visa-supported job
Search Workbeyond for visa-supported roles in Sweden from employers who are actively hiring foreign workers. Any Swedish employer can sponsor a work permit — no licence or accreditation is needed. Filter by city, industry, and seniority level, then apply directly through the listing.
2
Your employer creates the application, you submit it
Once you accept an offer, your employer starts the application process on Migrationsverket's website by entering details about the job and terms of employment. You then receive a link to complete your part of the application, including personal details, a passport copy, and payment of the application fee. Both parts must be submitted for processing to begin.
3
Wait for processing
Migrationsverket assesses the application. They verify that the salary meets the threshold, the terms match collective agreements or industry practice, and the employer has complied with all requirements. Processing takes 1–4 months. You may be asked for additional documentation during this period.
4
Receive your decision and travel
If approved, you receive a work permit card. Travel to Sweden and register with Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency) for a personnummer (personal identity number). If your stay is under 1 year, you must have comprehensive health insurance arranged before arrival (mandatory since 1 June 2026).
5
Set up your life
Open a Swedish bank account (SEB, Handelsbanken, and Swedbank accept new arrivals with personnummer and permit card). Register with your regional healthcare provider. Find housing — Sweden's housing market, particularly in Stockholm, has long waiting lists for first-hand rental contracts. Second-hand sublets and private rentals are more accessible but typically cost more. Budget for 1–3 months' deposit and first month's rent.
Cost of Living

What does life cost in Sweden?

Sweden is moderately expensive by Nordic standards. Stockholm is the most expensive city, comparable to Copenhagen. Gothenburg and Malmö are 15–20% cheaper. Smaller cities like Uppsala, Linköping, and Umeå are more affordable. Sweden's strong public services (healthcare, education, parental leave) mean many costs that are private elsewhere are publicly funded.

On the new minimum salary of SEK 34,470/month (SEK 413,640/year gross), your take-home after income tax is roughly SEK 26,000–28,000/month. In Gothenburg or Malmö, this covers rent, food, transport, and modest savings. In Stockholm, housing takes a larger share.
